... well have a leak someplace as already mentioned. But have you checked the gap between the clutch plates (if you can get a feeler gauge in there)? The ... 0.005". If it's out of spec, the clutch might engage occasionally or not at all. If it's too wide, you'll need to remove one or more shims to adjust it.

The air gap of the clutch is too big. It should be about .020. You can use feeler gauges to check this. As the clutch wears the gap increases.
The front part of the clutch hub can be removed and a shim ... that you know the problem.

(speaking of adjusting) Are you sure you don't just have to remove shims as needed to adjust the air gap?
Doing just that on my 1998 Frontier fixed its AC about 3 years ago, I removed the thinner of its two shims !!!! I did this without even taking the belt off the AC clutch. I did have to purchase ...

Yeah Cusser, nobody wants to believe it is the clutch gap. Lots of compressors replaced for lack of an adjustment.
The hot resistance of the coil is greater than cold. Less magnetizing force hot. Add in some slightly higher resistance connections in the circuit... Quits working when it is hot.
