Re: AC compressor leaking - Can I patch it?

A 14 year old scroll compressor that is leaking oil... One choice A/C or NO A/C. The compressor is shedding metal in to the condenser. It is also losing lubricant. The fix is a new compressor, a new condenser and a new dryer. As a Vue owner I can tell you the job is not a driveway job. The service m...

Re: new member and have a non typical application

Ice: I am usually wandering around SEMA every year. Get your employer to send you there for "Research"... danev2: Ice is talking about the frangible drive spider in those compressors. If the compressor seizes up the spider fails so that the serpentine belt does not break. Probably a useful...

Re: new member and have a non typical application

There are clutchless automotive compressors that spin full time. The output is controlled electrically.

If you are sharing a pad with an existing item I have seen "Y" type couplers with gearsets inside. Probably possible to get your reduction that way.

Re: new member and have a non typical application

Ice, I have learned a lot from you over the years. I had to go look it up - my first foray in to the (MVAC) oil separator game was in 2003. We discussed it in 2005 here: https://www.autoacforum.com/messageview.cfm?catid=2&threadid=12821 That motorhome ran for almost a decade on that SD7 compress...

Re: new member and have a non typical application

Ice: The "pads" are on the accessory gearbox with a gas turbine. They run at a fraction of the turbine speed. With a turboshaft engine the N1 turbine spins the compressor & the accessory gearbox at a fairly constant speed. The N2 turbine spins the output shaft through a separate gearbo...

Re: new member and have a non typical application

Lytron http://www.lytron.com/heat-exchangers/custom/ MacD? Mcdonell Douglas? Any aircraft plant should be able to design & fabricate a suitable oil separator. As far as a weight penalty, there should not be that much metal to hold a pint of oil. Certainly not the weight penalty of the 135 amp 28...

Re: new member and have a non typical application

I would be inclined to add an oil separator after the compressor so that higher OCR's can be used while controlling the oil at the compressor. It also leaves a handy spot to store the pieces of a scroll compressor when it does what it always does. MacD should be able to fabricate such an item. The l...

Re: strange cooling

I do understand the daily driver issue - I was looking at a vintage ragtop as more of a weekend toy. There are a lot of different GM manifold sets out there, and a lot of them interchange. A couple of them that come to mind are GM 14081324 , 10135634, 14046042 You can do an image search for GM compr...

Re: Not sure where to go from here

Cusser: You are so very right - a 30 lb tank of 134a with 3 ounces of refrigerant left in it is still 100 psi. But there IS a clue in his statement. All of his ambient data indicates a max of 80f. So after sitting overnight his system should be no more than 80f... And 134a @ 80f should have a vapor ...

Re: A/C readings all over the place

The valves on the manifold set remain Closed when evaluating a system The high side valve should stay closed any time the compressor is running.

Test the system with both valves on the manifold closed. Run at idle & record the pressures & the ambient temperature. Post the results.
