Re: Help picking a compressor

Running a Chinese import knock-off comp on my car since last August, and it's a way more complex and delicate variable displacement comp too. No issues at all and pretty quiet too, so i'd say no problem as long as you get it installed the correct way and ensure the rest of the AC system is in perfec...

Re: Ice on pipe from evaporator

IMHO i'd stay away from aftermarket for a TXV. These are precision metering devices and there's a precise MOP and flow control curve for each AC system. I'd buy either Denso or second hand.

Re: Ice on pipe from evaporator

Might also be a jammed open TXV. Especially if AC is wimpy all the time, not just ice cold for some time then gradually warmer (this is what an evaporator that is running too cold usually yields). Too much refrigerant flowing through, suction gets too high (so the evaporator can't get cold enough) a...

Re: New A/C compressor locked up after not operating for 6 months

How much is the question. I've heard of (let's specify some) new comps stating pre-charged yet turning up with less than the system amount of oil inside. Good habit is to drain any oil out of the new comp, dispose of any drained oil properly, and then refill it to the proper amount with commercial D...

Re: New A/C compressor locked up after not operating for 6 months

A compressor needs oil to not seize up. Especially this compressor design, inside of which a set of piston shoe bearings ride the edges of a swash plate. Picks oil from the suction refrigerant stream. Not enough oil in the right places at the right times, and things start scraping almost like a fing...

Re: Help with refrigerant

20 years open to the elements means badly corroded evaporator, condenser and piping IMHO

Re: A/C controls

Cusser is right, with fixed displacement compressors automatic temperature control (that kind of AC where you set the interior temperature you want in digits) is accomplished by adding heat and/or regulating blower speed and/or air recirculation percentage. Regulating interior temperature by directl...

Re: 1996 Cadillac Seville new AC question

Beware, a system with a not so efficient condenser/condenser fan (or severely overcharged on oil) can behave like it's overcharged even when the correct amount of refrigerant is inside. My car's AC had the former issue (a severely worn electric fan motor that didn't allow the fan to move enough air ...

Re: 1996 Cadillac Seville new AC question

Careful with the jumping a comp back to life stuff - this is what can happen if the problem is not enough refrigerant (static pressures can be really deceptive) and the compressor is not getting enough oil flowing back as a result. Whenever a low charge is suspected, recover, weigh and assess. No ot...

Re: compressor oil quantity

For the sake of clarity, here in Europe PAG 68 isn't OEM Sanden SP-15 - the OEM oil is pretty hard to find here too. PAG 68 is just an easily available AC lubricant also sold as "Universal PAG" under different brands. Viscosities are an intermediate between PAG 100 and PAG 46 - for some re...
