We had the exact same car, year options and everything and came here for a wedding in the head of June and it did great. This Subaru is black on black.

That proves that decent AC is achievable.

Based in Phoenix/Scottsdale too. Over the last few decades I've purchased quite a few AC parts for my stable of vehicles, including the compressor for my 1988 Mazda truck which was seemingly impossible to find brand new.

Thank you all! I have repaired many ac units but it’s nice to actually learn a bit about the components I usually just change out. I have a basic idea of how it all works but nothing about what makes one txv perform any differently from another along with the rest of the components. I’ll be ordering the 4750511 txv, a Denso pump and a Denso condenser today.

So, just to make sure I have a grasp on things. The needle pulsing is due to the compressor failing, one of the cycles not sealing properly or something along those lines? What about the low side being so high? Is that due to a potential blockage?

Wow. Order the wrong part for your car. Based on a guess about why it looks different from a Toyota part for a smaller compressor and different evaporator.

The engineering staff at both Subaru and Denso are obviously trying to cheat you out of some cooling, that is why the part is different.

Please, just use the right parts for your vehicle.

The reason the low side pressure is high, is because it is warm. Reduced refrigerant flow because of a worn out scroll compressor at idle. When you rev the engine up, it pumps enough volume to deliver good liquid flow to the TXV - and it starts cooling. That is how you spot a dead scroll.

I see I found the typical forum nazi. I suppose I should inform you about the brand new oem txv I have still in the box from when I did the condenser. I’m interested in learning and seeing the different performance and behavior between the two txv’s for myself. Why is one built one way and one is built the other, figured I could afford $28 to find out for myself given I have a pump and canister available to recover the r134. I was interested in the post about the difference in txv’s and figured it was like just about everything else in the auto world, some manufactures will sacrifice efficiency for some other goal.

I will throw in that what has me most intrigued is why they may or may not do something to make the refrigerant flow more silent. I’ve never had a car so quiet that I turned on the ac and said to myself “damn this noisy orifice” .

Can be a good thing, because it can tell you that the system is getting low on refrigerant charge.

One can tell that readily in Phoenix because the vehicle will be hot as hell.

I owe an apology. I’m sorry, and completely out of line. I came here for help and to learn, and getting defensive while acting like a fool isn’t helping me.

I also feel like I let my common sense get away from me, and please correct me if I’m wrong but wouldn’t it be pointless to try and further improve efficiency because the evaporator can only get so cold before the evap temp sensor shuts it down to prevent freeze up?
