I didn't know about the leak(s). Definitely locate and repair any leaks first. I prefer an electronic "sniffer" for that purpose.

Somebody said what is happening is similar to what happened with R12. Except that we could retrofit our R12 systems for R134.
As of now, there is no retrofit gas that I am aware of for R134.

And I am sure that history will repeat itself. In 10 yrs, they (government regulators) will find a reason that R1234YF is harmful, and ban it, and start the never ending cash-cow cycle all over again

Waited 3 months for my new refrigerator to arrive, was delivered yesterday. It uses R600a (isobutane) as refrigerant.

The 23-year-old unit had malfunctioned while I was away for 2 weeks, everything spoiled, smelled like Jimmy Hoffa's body had been there for decades; couldn't get rid of the smell. That unit was purchased 3 years ago for $50 from local Craigslist, and I sold the unit left for us by first owners for $50 3 days later.

I, too, have a fairly new wine cooler charged with R-600a (Cyclopentane). Manufacturer has pasted all over the back of the unit various yellow-and-black "danger" and "caution" stickers in several languages warning about the risk of fire and/or explosion should the refrigeration system spring a leak. Gee, I wonder why?

Don't worry. As soon as all the Global Warming policies are in place, and you're driving a Tesla. It will be so cold you won't need a fridge.

Just under $8 a can for pure R134a yesterday at Walmart. I didn't notice if the cans were the newer "self sealers" or not.
