What’s the Most Reliable Way to Diagnose Intermittent A/C Cooling Issues in Modern Vehicles?

Post by Jacob6785 »

Hi all,

I’m looking to get some professional and practical input from those with hands-on experience in the automotive A/C field.

Recently, I've come across a few vehicles (mainly late-model sedans and SUVs) where the A/C works perfectly during short drives, but fails to cool consistently during longer runs or under higher loads. These aren't full-blown compressor failures — more like intermittent cooling issues that are tough to replicate in a quick inspection.

In your experience, what’s been the most reliable method or tool for diagnosing these types of issues?

Are pressure readings enough?

How helpful have you found thermal imaging or advanced scan tools with A/C module access?

Do certain vehicle brands have more predictable failure patterns?

I work primarily in residential/commercial refrigeration at (SPAM), but have started taking on light automotive cooling work, and I’d love to learn from those who are more seasoned in the vehicle side of things.

Looking forward to your insights — I’m sure a lot of us could benefit from shared experience on this topic.

Thanks in advance,
