Do You Prefer Electronic Leak Detectors or UV Dye for A/C Systems?

Post by Cindy Zhang »

I've been in the field for a while now, and one thing I keep going back and forth on is leak detection methods. Wanted to get some input from the community here.

Electronic leak detectors — seems like everyone has one in their truck these days. Heated diode, infrared, ultrasonic... lots of options out there. They're great for quick scanning and can pinpoint a leak on the spot. But I've also had issues with false positives, especially in dirty environments or when there's refrigerant residue from previous work. And let's be honest, the good ones aren't cheap, and sensors need regular replacement.

UV dye — I know some guys swear by it, others won't touch it. The way I see it, dye is fantastic for those slow, intermittent leaks that only show up when the system is running. You inject it, let the system circulate for a while, and come back with a UV light — if there's a leak, it glows bright and you know exactly where to look. No guessing, no chasing false alarms. I've had situations where I spent hours with an electronic sniffer and came up empty, but the dye showed the leak in minutes.

The downsides? Some techs worry about dye contaminating the system or causing issues with components. Others say it's messy and time-consuming. And I've heard certain manufacturers won't honor warranty claims if dye was used.

So I'm curious — what's your go-to method? Do you stick with electronic detectors for everything? Or do you keep UV dye in your arsenal for those hard-to-find leaks? Have you ever had a bad experience with either method?

Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

Good-quality electric is my choice. I use the Bacharach H-10 PRO.

I use both.
I have a TIF 5650 that I bought new years ago and it STILL works as good as new. False positives can be an issue tho.
Some situations my sniffer seems to work better. Other situations, dye seems to get the job done best.
Sometimes I use one to confirm the other.

Never had any issues with using either.
